The trip from Delaware City down the full length of Delaware Bay was pleasant enough although not very interesting. There do not appear to be any stops along the way so one must check the weather pretty closely since the Bay is quite wide as it nears the Atlantic Ocean. Fortunately there is the Cape May Canal which allows one to take a shortcut and avoid going all the way around the cape. The car ferries actually run between the start of the canal to Lewes Delaware and makes the 17 mile trip in about an hour and a half. Without the ferry Cape May would not be as popular because it is so far down the coast with no where else to go but back.
Cape May is a neat town, a true coastal get away for all ages. There is a nice beach which extends about a mile or so and a pedestrian mall of about 3 blocks where numerous touristy shops, galleries, pubs and Ben and Jerry's are located. The town was established in the 1800's and there are a great number of Victorian style houses which have been converted to B & B's or condos. We never got any photos of the beach but we did get a few of some of the houses.
We ate and drank well, as usual. One of my favorite places, and evidently Mitch's too, was a local tavern called C View Tavern. On Tuesday we tried to get into the Lobster House but there was a 1:50 hrs wait to get a table for the two of us. Guess what, we ate at the Lucky Bones Backwater Grill. The bacon wrapped scallops were excellent.
The houses in the old part of town, which is the downtown area, are spectacular. I will try to give you a sense of the area with a few photos.
