It was not a favourable forecast but we were anxious to move on. The waves were 'supposed' to diminish through the day and then increase again after 5 PM. At 11:00 AM the waves were 3-5 as advertised. The winds were from the west (read much rocking and rolling) so guess what we did?? Real cruising, somewhat bumpy, but 21 mph and arrival in 2 hrs, 20 minutes. It took longer than it should have for the 33 miles because we kept encountering fishing nets. 5 sets from 1 mile north of Muskegon to about 3 miles north of Grand Haven in waters between 100 and 150 feet. (Note: this level of detail is for the loopers who are behind us.) I understand that the waves did go to 2-3 late in the afternoon for a couple of hours but by nightfall we were getting rocked quite heavily even though the gales do not start officially until Tuesday. The municipal marina here in Grand Haven has a well deserved, bad reputation for being a bouncy dockage.
All 5 boats made it to Grand Haven and after a great spaghetti dinner on board Windsong, we stayed and watched the fountain, sound and light show just across the water from our boats. It was very impressive and they pulled in quite a number of viewers in the grandstands even though it was rainy off and on....and did I mention it was windy??? ... no need, it is always windy here on Lake Michigan.
I am getting caught up on some things and if the rain stops later today, we can go do some exploring.
It looks like we will be here until Thursday because of the winds. So far in 1 month we have had 11 weather related delay days. Hope things get better in that regard.
