Pirate's Marina Cove, Pickensville, AL

(Wednesday, Nov. 3 - Dist: 28.8 mi; Avg Speed: 8.7 mph; TTT: 3:40 hrs; Locks: 1)

Despite the rain, hard at times, we decided to go to the next marina down the line.  The Stannis Lock just around the corner was open for us when the 6 of us arrived in the morning.  We pushed off the dock at 8:35 AM after passing a bottle of wine to the couple whose swimplatform we used for two days, and were through the lock by 9:05 AM.  I wish every lock was that quick and smooth.

The rain was a pain but not overly problematic.  We did meet a couple of tows but they were both 1 by 2's so there was plenty of room to pass even though the channel was quite narrow.  As we neared the next lock and the entrance to the marina it was like entering a construction zone on a highway, complete with detours and all.  Dredging operations were going full force; not just 1 dredge but a number of them.  We had to go dead slow and wind our way around a couple of tugs and equipment to the entrance to the cove.  There some of the buoys were missing because of the dredging operations but we really didn't have any problem getting in.

Since it was early, we took the courtesy van to the Tom Bevill museum which was just around the corner at the lock.  All of these photos are from this museum.  It is not authentic but a recreation that uses a lot of authentic material.

The lock is free now so I have to run.
