Gowers Isalnd Anchorage, TN

(Oct.6 – Dist: mi; Avg Speed: 6.8 mph; TTT: 8:30 hrs)

It was another pleasant day on the Cumberland River except for the fact that we had a 2 hour wait to get into the Cheatham Lock. Unfortunately we encountered our second tow in three days just as he was entering this lock. He was long enough that it took 2 drops which meant that he pushed his barges into the lock, had to disconnect and back out, lock through himself once the barges were removed and then reconnect with the barges. What we have not been able to determine is how the barges were removed from the lock. It appeared that there was some propulsion of some kind on the barges or it was simply the current which was moving them.  That would explain why it took forever.

The shoreline is giving way to some agricultural land but there are still some neat limestone cliffs to be seen.

Interesting the Barkley Pool is down 4 feet (ie. elevation 454.9) but the Cheatham Pool, which we entered after the lock, is up 8 inches at an elevation of 485.66.

Here is home for the night and another pleasant evening after having to reset the anchors a second time. In these narrow areas behind islands we have had to set a stern anchor in ordered to avoid swinging into the bush. We have managed it a couple of times now although it is a pain in the a….

Good night.
