Fernandina Harbor Marina

(Wed. May 4, 2011 - Dist: 60.9 mi; Avg Speed: 8.6 mph; TTT: 7:00 hrs)

Fernandina Florida is a neat old town with lots of old homes and buildings.  It is almost as old as St. Augustine but a fire in town forced them to rebuild thereby losing there age distinction.

The Marina is right on the ICW very near to a port which can handle ocean going freighters.  It was tricky getting in because the transient dock is a very long floating dock with only about 50 feet from the slips on the inside.  When we arrived the wind was blowing about 15-20 mph keeping us off the dock while the current was moving about 4 mph.  For you non boaters it was like parallel parking but with the wind and the current working against you.  Anyway we thought it out in advance and came in smoothly without any problems.  We were worried about leaving as well but it was calm and we were able to back all the way out into the channel.

There were plenty of good looking restaurants in the town but unfortunately our first pick when we arrived was disappointing.  The second day however we found a superb spot called "29 South" which we really enjoyed.  We would recommend it highly.

Linda was disappointed that I would not go through the shops with her so we left that for another time.

Basically we only stayed the 2 nights and then headed for Jekyll Island.
