Jekyll Island

(Fri. May 6 - Dist: 32.0 mi; Avg Speed: 10.1 mph; TTT: 3:15 hrs)

Welcome to Georgia

Georgia: mud flats, marshes, skinny narrow waterways, noseeums and yellow flies as big as bumble bees.  It is my least favourite waterway of the Great Loop thus far.

Jekyll Harbor Marina, home port for our good friends Richard and Jill on Finally.   It was so good to see them and visit for the weekend.  They were so generous with their time, taking us for tours on both Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island.  Both islands are side by side but quite different yet both very interesting in their own way.

Jekyll Island is basically a State Park that maintains the history from around 1900 and has numerous parks, playing fields and beaches for the use of the public.  The Island was originally the winter escape for the rich and famous. The Rockfellers, Goodyears, Cranes, etc. all built elaborate 'cottages' on the island.  Most did not have kitchens however since all food and socializing was done at "The Club".  The Crane (of bathroom fame) Cottage, for instance, had 22 rooms with 20 bathrooms but no kitchen.  The State has restricted any further development so any new building must be done on already built land.  A full two thirds of the island will remain undeveloped.  It is being managed very well and is a great place to visit.

St. Simons Island on the other hand is where the rich and famous now live and play.  Beautiful little town and gated communities and inaccessible golf courses take up a good portion of the island.

Twas a great visit despite the post Loop funk that Jill was experiencing.  She is ready to go again after only 3 weeks back home.  I wonder what we will do???
