Haborwalk Marina, Georgetown SC

(Sat May 14 - Dist: 66.5 mi; Avg Speed: 10.9 mph; TTT: 6:10 hrs)

First stop after arriving in Georgetown was one of the numerous bars on the Harborwalk.  The clams were superb in this place and the beer was cold;  a great way to unwind from the trip through the last part of Georgia and the start of South Carolina.   This leg was mostly marshes as you can see how long the dock needs to be before you can reach some reliable water depths.  We managed the shallow and narrow areas OK but we could not handle the flies; big, yellow, flesh eating, horse fly-type beasts.   At one point there must have been 3 dozens of the buggers on the fly bridge so we rolled down the canvas and took off on plane.  This little insect repellent move was effective but probably cost about $100 in fuel.  We are weak.

On the positive side we had more time in Georgetown.  It is a clean, quiet town where the people are super friendly.  It seems even the visitors get into the mood and so it becomes a great stop.  After the great clams at the Big Tuna we strolled around town and discovered another bar along the Harborwalk that had $1 PBR's.  For you less experienced bar hoppers, PBR is Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.  The dining area was a bit fancy so Linda and I decided to take the last two stools at the bar and joined 4 other guys.  Well the guys were all boaters and with the help of the bartender we were having a good time with lots of laughs and digs as if we had known each other for years.   We were having such a good time that we ended up eating there before stumbling back to the boat.

You can see that we were tucked pretty tight in the harbor.  It was a beautiful, newly renovated marina right downtown and adjacent to the Harborwalk.  I was surprised to see that when the tide was in that it entered the parking lot adjacent to the marina.  I cannot remember if it was a full moon but I suspect that it was.  I am still not fully used to the whole business of tides and tidal currents.  I am constantly amazed at the height fluctuations (the most we saw was 7 feet) and the strength of the tidal currents (sometimes 3 or 4 MPH).

Georgetwon was a great stop, I would like to do it again.
