Solomons Yachting Center, Solomons MD

(Thurs. July 7 – Dist: 44.8 mi; Avg Speed: 9.0 mph; TTT: 5:00 hrs)

As you can see, it was a bit foggy when we left Cole’s Point Plantation Marina near Ragged Point so I turned on the radar unit as an extra precaution. Well that lasted for about 10 minutes and then it stopped going around. Now what. Leaving Washington our GPS failed and now the radar unit. Oh well, visibility was still at least half a mile so we carried on. Worst case scenario… since the unit was facing the stern (rear), I could always turn around backwards to see what was in front. ;>)

The remainder of the trip was pleasant except for the period that we were running adjacent to a live firing exercise that the Navy was conducting. Even then, I wish that I could have seen more. We heard lots of radio chatter from the Navy Range boats that were chasing other boaters out of the firing range but for us we only saw the range boats, a few fighter jets flying overhead and a couple of loud, very loud bangs.

Solomons is a neat boating community not far up the Patuxent River. There are numerous marinas and numerous restaurants and bars. We stayed at the Yachting Centre because it was within walking distance of the “action” and because it had a pool and bar on site. It was a friendly place and we enjoyed it thoroughly. The infamous Tiki bar was OK but the coup de grace was the crab cakes at Stoney’s; the absolute, very best that we have ever had.  Linda had to have them 2 nights in a row, they were that good. At this point, we decided to forego Annapolis on this trip and stay another night here. I was concerned that it would be difficult to find dockage on the weekend and that we probably would not have enough time to do the visit justice. We had a technician scheduled for Tuesday in Baltimore to perform some routine maintenance on our engines so we took it easy for another day.

Sorry, not many photos from here. Just this nondescript sunrise:

  1. We aren't far behind you. We are at Bald Head Island, NC. We are scheduled to be pulled for a bottom job in Solomons on August 1st. Where are you going to be for the next few weeks? We will be in the Chesapeake after our haul out. Will you be back in Florida next winter? Would love to see you again.
